Deep pocket sheets can be the icing on your little cake of comfort. Whether you have a pillowtop mattress or have added a foam or other topper to a standard mattress, it may have become somewhat tiring to remake the entire bed every morning because the sheets did not stay put. If you need stay-put sheets, deep pocket sheets are for you. As they have become more popular, so has the variety of bedding materials available, such as 100% cotton, organic cotton, poly/cotton, flannel, bridal satin, and bamboo/cotton blend.

Arm yourself with a full set of the dimensions of your mattress before heading off to a specialty-bedding store, your discount department store, or to provide to a custom sheet company. Follow these specific guidelines for taking measurements and you will be doing your best towards finding a perfect set of sheets deep pocket or not. Your result should be corners that fit where they belong and the full encircling elastic edge tucked under the mattress. Measure the width and length of the mattress as opposed to reading the mattress tags and recording the numbers. The depth is the critical feature. Avoid measuring from cord to cord. Start with the tape measure on top of the box spring, and place a hand on top of the uppermost mattress. Now measure and round off to the nearest inch. How do you translate these measurements into the ideal sheet size? The width of an ideal top sheet should be the width of the mattress plus twice the depth plus another ten inches. The length of the sheet should equal the length of the mattress plus the depth plus eight inches. If you are shopping for pre-manufactured deep pocket flannel sheets, or other pure cotton sheets, calculate in about 2% for shrinkage.

The packaging and labeling on the inventory should help you decide the right fit for your needs. An example of the packet contents and measurements for extra deep pocket sheets for a queen size bed includes one Queen fitted sheet, with elastic all around, at 60 inches wide x 80 inches long, one Queen flat sheet at 92 inches wide x 102 inches long, two Standard/Queen pillow cases at 20 inch x 32 inches, and a pocket depth of 21 inches. These deep pocket queen sheets should fit snuggly with the pocket lining up with the corners of the mattress.

To add to the quality and comfort of your sleep purchase, it pays to learn about quality of sheet materials. High thread count is often promoted as the sole indicator of quality, whereas it is only one, and not the determining, factor. Experts evaluate bedding according to fiber quality, yarn size, finishing, and finally thread count and construction.

Cotton is the most popular fiber for sheets and cotton deep pocket sheets are best made from long staple cotton such as Egyptian or Pima. The yarn size determines the weight and flexibility of the sheeting material, with the quality range 40 to 100. The higher the thread count, the finer the yarn required. Sheets finished by singeing and being mercerized are smoother and more receptive to the dyes added if any. Examining thread count, anything over 300 threads per inch does not contribute to comfort appreciably. If there is a high thread count, there should be a corresponding high price; else, it reflects construction that sacrifices quality to attain the amount of threads per square inch.

When looking for the best nights sleep, put time into researching the market for deep pocket sheets. Your conscience and pocketbook will rest easy too.
