Flat Sheets Enhance the Sleep Experience

Flat sheets are useful in the making of neat and comfortable bed. Often they are sold in combination with fitted sheets and therefore the colors and patterns will match perfectly. Buying fitted and flat sheets together makes sense because the manufacturer likely used the same dye lot during production. Buying the two types of sheets at different times may lead to unwanted color variations, which is typical for dyed fabrics.

Using a flat helps to keep your blanket or comforter clean and reduces wear and tear on the more expensive blanket. Certainly, it is easier to wash and dry a sheet than washing a bulky, hard-to-dry comforter, which may take all day to dry. Some people may opt to iron their sheets before laying it on the bed, but this is only necessary if guests will see it.

For home use, ironing sheets is a large, time consuming errand that most people likely would not undertake. To reduce wrinkles make sure to use a dryer sheet. When dryer cycle is complete, remove them immediately so that it does not gain wrinkles from sitting in a ball in the dryer. Fold sheets in half, then in half again making sure to press the folds firmly to keep the material in place. Fold again and again until they are the desired size.

When making the bed, apply the fitted sheet over the mattress first. It is the one with elastic grips in all four corners. It should be a tight fit around the mattress as this increases comfort for the sleeping individual. Then it is time for the flat ones.

flat sheetsIt is a good idea to lay the front of the sheet (the side with the picture or pattern) face down on top of the first one, making sure to leave some extra length at the top for folding at the end. Make sure that the excess fabric on the sides is evenly distributed along the entire length of the mattress. Then, tuck the end piece into the end of the mattress. Also, tuck a little bit of the side pieces into the mattress. If you prefer, all the sides can be tucked along the mattress, although this makes for a tight fit when crawling into bed. Then lay the blanket or comforter over top of everything. Using the extra fabric reserved in step one, now fold it over the blanket to make a neat appearance. The pattern of the sheet should be very apparent on top of the blanket.

All sheets come in different sizes. Know the size of your bed before buying. Typical sizes are twin, twin long (for dorm room beds), double (which is the same size as regular), queen, king and California king, which is the largest size. If you have an odd shaped bed, such as a circle or heart, you likely will need to special order from a specialty linen shop. Also, a seamstress could help design a pattern for your use.

Sheets can be purchased at bedding superstores and they can also be found at department stores. They can also be purchased from mail and online catalogs as well as specialty linen stores. The quality of the material will determine the price. Cotton sheets are inexpensive, but they range in price, as well, when you take “thread count” into account. The more threads noted on the package, the softer and higher quality you can expect from the product. Other materials you may find include silk, satin, linen or others. Of course, the sky is the limit in terms of color, pattern or even texture.
