Futon Mattresses: Purchasing Decisions
Like with many types of mattresses on the market, there are different types of futon mattresses as well. You might think that this is strange until you start searching for them. It’s probably how you ended up here, on our site, reading this article. Good for you! You’re someone who is actually going to get a great deal on a new mattress. Why? Well, for one thing, you’re educating yourself. If there is one thing that will never hurt you when making a buying decision, that is education. And, this is never more true than in the mattress buying process.
If you’ve ever been to a traditional brick and mortar mattress store, then you know it can feel like you are on a used car lot sometimes. The way you can be badgered or nearly harassed. So, hopefully, this article will introduce you to some concepts regarding a futon mattress purchase. If you’re simply browsing around, then best wishes to you as well.
There are various manufacturers that are selling this type of mattress. In the past, you may have been put off thinking that only oversea manufacturers were making them with questionable materials. Well, you would have been right. However, now, companies like Beautyrest™, Sealy™ and Simmons™, just to name a few are in the futon market as well. These mattresses look the same, but differ by sizes, types and, of course, materials. There are some questions that you should always ask before buying a futon mattress. If you choose to purchase it from a specialized store, ask the vendor all the details of its materials: infill, cover, foam, springs, cotton, wool, poly-blend, you name it. Don’t be afraid to ask all sorts of questions. You’ll never know if you don’t ask.
One of the more important questions to consider is also any possible warranty. If your futon is covered by one, then you’re likely buying from a reputable company. If not, either find out why or run to the next store. If you’re shopping online, then contact the vendor or manufacturer directly. You might have to wait for response, so be patient. If you plan on resting your head on this futon each night, it will be well worth finding the answers to these questions. There have been some points and issues raised in the past concerning off-gassing of materials. This happens with conventional mattresses, too, but it can be minimized if you purchase a mattress made with natural or organic materials.
In the past, futons were known to have a bad reputation in terms of comfort or durability. Not the best combination for an item that at the top of the list of priorities would be comfort. Sleep is such an integral part of our biological processes that not getting a good night’s sleep can be hazardous to our health, literally. This was the past. Futons were made of ultrathin and poor infill materials. This made them prone to quickly flattening and causing an uncomfortable night’s sleep. You could feel the bed frame jamming into your back, not good.
Now, futon mattresses are made with many of the same materials that more conventional mattresses are made of. Such materials include more upgraded foams, memory foam materials and toppers, inner coil springs and other quality padding materials. The thickness of the mattress is much greater now, too, leading to better sleep and a more resilient mattress.
The thickness of the mattress is also something to consider when you are investigating the types of sheets you’ll be using. This used to be much more of a concern before conventional beds became thicker as well. Sheets used to not come in the heights necessary to properly fit a bed like this. Just like with a waterbed, the futon had special sheets and bedding needs. This isn’t so much the case today, as we’ve mentioned, so feel free to use those luxurious silk or satin sheets that you’ve always wanted. Combine those with one of the more plush futons and you’ve got yourself a great sleep system.
Another thing that can be of great value is the bed frame. Many manufacturers will include in your purchase, futon bed frames that will suit most individuals. If you plan on using your futon in a guest room or home office, then this might suffice. However, if you plan on using it for your primary sleeping arrangement, then you’ll want to upgrade to a more solid frame. Such frames can be made of wood; pine, oak or cherry. These can be custom built with storage, headboards and shelving.
What Do Futons Cost?
This often depends upon the size of the mattress you are purchasing and the deal you get. For the smaller sizes, twin or full, you can find one in the low $100s USD. This may even include a frame, though it may be a tubular metal one. Not the most décor inspiring model, but it is sufficient for some. For a more luxurious, modern futon with inner coil springs or memory foam of a larger size, you could spend upwards of $500 USD or more. Don’t get caught up buying a cheap futon mattress just because of the price. If you plan on sleeping on it regularly, spend a little more and you’ll be glad you saved yourself from the possible morning aches and pains.
