Comfort in the Pregnancy Pillow

27 March 2010 319 views No Comment

As a woman enters her second and third trimester of pregnancy, it becomes increasingly more difficult to get comfortable while trying to relax and sleep. Usually by this time in her pregnancy, it is no longer possible to sleep on the belly. Consequently, women are looking for ways to improve the ability to fall asleep quicker and remain comfortable throughout the night or while napping.

To accommodate the expectant mother various products have entered the marketplace over the past ten years that were not available to mothers of yesteryear. The introduction of the body pillow gave way to the introduction of the pregnancy pillow. Women are raving about the comfort this new pillow offers. Unlike the body pillow that is generally a straight body length roll pillow, this one coils around for flexibility and variable support.

Often times excess weight experienced by pregnant women causes strain on the knees and other joints, thus causing discomfort. Placing the pillow between the knees takes pressure off of hips and knees while relaxing. The growing belly can also cause an imbalance in posture, which can cause backaches and pain. Supporting the lower back and neck will alleviate the pain. In this case, it may be advisable to invest in two pregnancy pillows, one for the front of the body and one to support the back. If it is not feasible to have two, a pregnancy support pillow and a regular rectangular bed pillow will suffice.

The design of this product considers the contours of the body rather than just the length. Its flexibility can add extra support anywhere along the body. The quality and fillers available determine the price. There are four different types of fillers.

A. Polyfill synthetic down

B. European natural good down

C. Comforel premium synthetic down with cluster fibers

D. Snoozerpedic with memory foam

Prices start around $55 to $60 and go to about $180 for the quality version with memory foam. The Snoozerpedic also has breathability for temperature control, which makes it worth the increased price. Although the other styles can not boast about the same features, they are also very comfortable. Those who prefer down will appreciate the other options.

As opposed to the coil shape, there is the design that is like a huge traditional pillow that supports the midsection in particular. Some even have handles for easy mobility. This version supports the back and stomach at the same time. There is no need for two pillows, but it is not a good option for placing between the knees for hip relief. This version costs around $80 and comes in an assortment of colors.

When shopping for the baby shower, why not buy something for mom besides a rocking chair? Rocking chairs are great for when baby arrives, but mom can make use of a snoogle pregnancy pillow before and after baby is born. After the new arrival comes home, mom can easily prop baby beside her. The only warning that should accompany this recommendation is the prospect of getting too comfortable and forgetting that baby is by mom’s side.

This specialty pillow can be found anyplace where baby products are sold. Even baby boutiques that only specialize in products for baby carry this product for expectant moms. Online carriers may have more selections with regard to colors and varieties. For anyone who gives it further thought, this body pillow does not have to be exclusive to pregnancy. Anyone in the home who wants extra comfort may find this to be the right product for them as well.
