How To Choose a Queen Headboard
Choosing a headboard for you bed can be a difficult task as there are numerous choices available. A headboard usually makes the bed the focal point of the bedroom. So, you want to choose a headboard that stands out, but at the same time does not over power the decor of the room. For example if you have light colored walls then you should go for a darker headboard and if you have a painted wall (always avoid a white queen headboard) or simple wall paper then go for a simple headboard. There are usually more choices for a queen headboard than a king headboard, because more queen size beds are sold. Next I’ll go over the choices you have.
The most popular material for a queen size headboard is wood. As always with wooden furniture there are plenty of choices. Basically there are two main styles available: modern and traditional. A modern wooden headboard at it’s simplest is just a rectangular piece of wood as opposed to a traditional one which can be a complex piece of art with carvings and paint. Choose the wood, finish and style to suit other furniture in the room. The headboard should be at least twice as high as your night stands, but less high than highest furniture in the room (for example a shelf).
The best looking metallic headboards are made by blacksmiths from bent wrought iron rod. They are very traditional in style and dark in color, but they can be expensive and hard to find. There are also modern ones available, but usually they imitate the style of the traditional ones with cheaper materials that can be mass produced in a factory. A metallic headboard is best for bedrooms with a Spanish style decor with walls that are painted yellow, orange or light red. The color of wooden furniture should also be quite dark.
Upholstered headboards are made from different sorts of fabrics and sometimes leather or vinyl. There is a variety of choices available. Upholstered headboards can also be very functional. An angled headboard that has sufficient cushioning can work as a backrest. That’s useful if you are watching the television, reading a book or even working with your laptop computer. If you already have a wooden or metallic headboard you can upholster it yourself instead of buying a new. You just need some fabric, some foam and a sowing machine. An easy trick to that can completely change look of your bedroom.
For a queen size bed a footboard can compliment the headboard perfectly. It makes the bed standout and it divides the room. However, a footboard is not always a good choice. They work better with smaller beds like queen size beds. A king size bed with a footboard might look too bulky and in most cases should be avoided. The same goes for queen size beds and footboards in small rooms. It makes the room feel smaller and should only be used when adequate space is available. There is one exception though, metallic headboards usually fit smaller rooms because they let the light through and take less space than wooden and upholstered footboards.
Hanging artwork on the wall on top of the headboard can sometimes be a good idea. Especially if the headboard is a smaller one or if you have a taller room than normally like in loft apartments. If the headboard does not stand out in the room (for example a light colored headboard in a light colored room) you can hang a darker painting top of the headboard to create the same eye-catching effect.
