How a Wool Blanket Keeps You Warm

When the winter comes we all start looking for something that can keep you warm during the coldest days, when your heating system is already working at maximum power but still the house feels cold. Your heating bills will climb to another level and you should instead try to wear something to keep you warm, and save money on your bills. A wool blanket is definitely a great way to keep your body temperature near your skin and keep you warm and cozy.

The way that clothing and a blanket works is that they are all materials that are filled with air. Since air is an efficient insulator – it doesn’t really transfer air in any other way than by moving to a location where the temperature is different – it works very well. Your body temperature heats the air that is trapped inside the material that is used to make the blanket and even if there is cold air on the outside, your body heat is very close to the blanket which prevents it from escaping the immediate proximity of your body.

Other materials that don’t really work for this purpose are usually used in clothing by creating layers – that way there is always air trapped between these layers and that is what keeps your body warm. The true benefit that you get from wool is that like cotton it does absorb quite a lot of water – meaning sweat and humidity – but the biggest advantage is that it is able to keep its ability to insulate even while wet – unlike cotton.

Wool BlanketMerino wool blankets are quite popular since Merino wool is one of the finest and softest wool that is available – it is like cashmir of wool. Merino is a breed of sheep that is known mainly for the quality of wool that they produce, and even if it is excellent for blankets, it is commonly used in athletic clothing like clothes that are designed for mountain climbing, cycling, running and basically anything that is performed outdoors. This is because it can absorb the sweat and humidity created by the body and still feel warm and dry. Also it is known to have antibacterial qualities, making it extremely hygienic.

This type of wool is usually found in vintage wool blankets, but since the quality of this high-end wool is appreciated, you can also find it in modern blankets also. The biggest difference is that if your grandmother bought one thirty years ago, the price is higher these days.

The best way you can use a blanket to keep warm during the coldest days is to wrap yourself in the blanket – this will actually prevent you from moving too much, and that is why most people just end up using it on top of them that is normally enough. Having a nice cup of hot chocolate or tea while you watch tv will add up to the insulating proprieties of a good blanket, and you can relax on your couch watching tv. If you are not single, you could get under the blanket with your partner, and allow your body heat to warm your partner and his or hers body heat to heat you – this way the blanket will be twice as effective, and you might even be uncomfortably hot after a short time.

Usually a blanket can be quite impractical and disabling, but today there are blankets with sleeves that allow you to use your hands normally, but at the same time be under a warm and cozy blanket while watching TV, reading a book or even surfing the internet on your laptop.
